Menominee Nation waits for state on off-reservation casino

The Menominee Nation is waiting for Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) to make a decision on its proposed off-reservation casino.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs approved the $800 million Kenosha Casino under the two-part determination provisions of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act in late August. The law gives veto authority to the state governor.

Walker has said he will take about 60 days to make a decision. That gives the Menominee Nation about another month to make its case amid opposition from the Forest County Potawatomi Tribe, whose off-reservation casino is about 40 miles from Kenosha.

The Menominees haven't said what they will do if Walker rejects the casino.
