The Miccosukee Tribe of Florida is suing the federal government over an investigation into the taxation of gaming per capita payments.
The tribes shares a portion of gaming revenues with its members. An investigation by the Internal Revenue Service determined that income taxes were never paid. According to a May article from The Miami Herald, the tribe owes $170 million in taxes and its members owe $58 million. The suit, however, claims the investigation was a breach of the federal government's trust responsibilities. It also claims a former chairman, Billy Cypress, entered into a "secret deal" with the IRS to gain access to the tribe's financial records.
