BIA moves ahead with Lac du Flambeau off-reservation casino

Monday, July 29, 2013

The Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians is seeing movement on its proposed off-reservation casino in Shullsburg, Wisconsin.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs will be preparing a draft environmental impact statement for the casino. A public meeting will be held August in Shullsburg, according to notice that was published in today's issue of the Federal Register.

The Bush administration first rejected the casino in January 2008 under a controversial guidance memo that said Shullsburg was too far from the reservation to benefit tribal members. The Obama administration has rescinded the memo.

Shullsburg is about 300 miles from tribal headquarters.
