The Cayuga Nation is being told to apply for a gambling license in the village of Union Springs, New York.
The tribe reopened the LakeSide Entertainment bingo hall last week. The facility sits on land that is not in trust so the village is asserting jurisdiction. "I've got a job to do and the Indians are no different than anybody else," Village Codes Officer Howard Tanner, who posted an "Order to Remedy Violations" on the door to the bingo hall, told The Syracuse Post-Standard. The tribe submitted a land-into-trust application for its properties but the Bureau of Indian Affairs hasn't announced a final decision. A tribal leader, however, claimed a decision was imminent in a declaration that was filed in federal court last month. Get the Story:
