The Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeno Indians discussed its off-reservation casino with the office of Gov. Jerry Brown (D) last week, The Desert Dispatch reports.
The tribe plans to build a casino in Barstow, more than 100 miles from the reservation. The project has local support but the tribe also needs to negotiate a Class III gaming compact with Brown. So far, Brown has negotiated two off-reservation compacts. One of them, for the North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians, was just ratified by the Legislature. “The fact that the [North Fork] project has been approved is good news for Barstow because it suggests that we will be able to successfully complete our project too," Barstow city council member Rich Harpole told the Dispatch.
