The Catawba Nation wants to share gaming revenues with the state of South Carolina.
Chief Bill Harris says a casino will benefit the tribe and the state. One estimate put the state's share at $100 million a year but Gov. NIkki Haley (R-South Carolina) doesn't seem interested in talking. “She believes South Carolina does not have to settle and that there is a better way,” a spokesperson for the governor told the Associated Press. The tribe reached a land claim settlement in 1993. The law barred the tribe from following the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act but the tribe can follow state law. State law currently allows casino boats. “We’re entitled to whatever the state authorizes,” Harris told the AP. The tribe is in court to assert its gaming rights. Get the Story:
