Sault Tribe asks court to dismiss lawsuit against casino project

Tuesday, November 13, 2012

The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians is asking a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit aimed at blocking its proposed off-reservation casino in Lansing, Michigan.

The tribe recently acquired a site in downtown Lansing for the casino. But the tribe says the lawsuit, which was filed by Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette, is premature because gaming hasn't been approved at the site.

The site was purchased with funds from the Michigan Indian Land Claims Settlement Act. As a result, the tribe believes the Bureau of Indian Affairs will be required to place the land in trust.
