Editorial: Voters keep their promise to gaming tribes in Oregon

Monday, November 12, 2012

"It speaks well of Oregonians that we voted overwhelmingly to leave casino gaming the province of Indian tribes.

Since a 1988 federal act approving tribal gaming, Oregon’s casino count has grown to nine. That’s nine opportunities for tribes around the state to generate revenue to run their governments, fund economic development and care for their members, as well as make money to donate to charity.

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that non-tribal casinos — in this case, one owned by a Canadian company — would only serve to reduce the cash currently gambled at the tribal operations."
