Editorial: Tribal casino market already saturated in Wisconsin

Thursday, October 11, 2012

"It's not what Beloit, Shullsburg, Kenosha and Sheboygan want to hear in their quests for casinos.

But it should give those communities — and the governor, who has the final say — pause.

A university study just suggested our state is already saturated with American Indian casinos. Virtually everyone in Wisconsin is within a two-hour drive of a casino. Casinos operate in 17 counties, and a dozen more casinos are near the border in Illinois, Iowa, Michigan and Minnesota.

"So any revenue for a new casino is likely to come from another tribe and community," Daniel Alesch said. "There would be no net gain for the people of the state — just a transfer of jobs and money from one place to another.""
