Opponents of the Enterprise Rancheria off-reservation casino will fight the tribe's Class III gaming compact in the California Legislature, The Sacramento Bee reports.
"The compact will run into a buzz saw," Doug Elmets, a spokesperson for the rival United Auburn Indian Community, told the paper. Gov. Jerry Brown (D) on Friday approved the Enterprise Rancheria's off-reservation casino. He also signed a compact with the tribe that must be ratified by state lawmakers. The Enterprise Rancheria is pursuing the casino under the two-part determination section of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. The Bureau of Indian Affairs must still approve the tribe's land-into-trust application before the tribe can start construction. Since 1988, only three tribes have opened casinos under the two-part determination section. None have been located in California. The United Auburn Indian Community opened its casino after 1988 under a different section of IGRA that didn't require the governor's approval. Get the Story:
