A group of developers is proposing an off-reservation casino in Colorado but they haven't said which tribe, or tribes, they are working with.
The Sleeping Giant Group wants to build a $52 million casino and hotel next to the Yampa Valley Regional Airport in Hayden in northern Colorado. The nearest reservation is more than 150 miles away, The Steamboat Today reported. "Preliminary outreach to Colorado historians indicates that at least three federally registered Native-American tribes have strong ancestral ties to the Yampa Valley region: The Northern Utes, The Mountain Utes, and The Southern Utes," the group says in a FAQ.The Northern Utes -- the Ute Tribe in Utah -- have proposed an off-reservation casino near the town of Dinosaur in Colorado. That site is only about two mile from the tribe's trust land.
