Mississippi Choctaws off-reservation casino still not on the radar

Friday, July 6, 2012

The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians hasn't taken any steps to revive plans for an off-reservation casino.

Under the late chief Philip Martin, the Choctaws sought to open a casino at a site about 175 miles from the main reservation. The Bush administration killed the project under a controversial "guidance memorandum" that made it virtually impossible for tribes to acquire land away from existing reservations.

The Obama administration rescinded the memo a year ago but there's been no movement on the tribe's end. "I have not heard one word," Jackson County Supervisor John McKay told The Biloxi Sun Herald.

Voters in Jackson County oppose the casino and Gov. Phil Bryant (R) said he won't support it.
