Details about Shakopee Tribe's deal with non-Indian racetrack

Wednesday, June 27, 2012

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports some details about an agreement between the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community and a non-Indian racetrack.

The tribe is pouring $75 million into Canterbury Park over the next 10 years. In exchange, the tribe gets a bigger role in marketing decisions at the facility.

The Mystic Lake Casino will be named as the track's exclusive casino hotel and the tribe gets naming rights to the track's winners circle, the paper said. The music stage is also likely to be named for the tribe.

The tribe will receive stock appreciation rights to 165,000 shares of Canterbury Park stock, the paper said. The tribe won't receive an ownership stake in the facility, a spokesperson said.

On its end, Canterbury Park has agreed to drop its push to add slot machines to the facility and has agreed to oppose any efforts to expand non-Indian gaming in the state.
