Town hosts vote on Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe gaming project

Tuesday, May 29, 2012

Residents of Freetown, Massachusetts, are at the polls today to say whether they want to host a casino for the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe.

The tribe has options on a 500-acre site on the Freetown border with Lakeville. Voters in Lakeville go to the polls this Saturday.

The tribe is planning a $300 million facility at the site. The project depends on the negotiation of a Class III gaming compact and the approval of a land-into-trust application.

Gov. Deval Patrick (D) has declined to enter into negotiations, prompting the threat of a lawsuit from the tribe.
