Members of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians will start voting today on a proposed off-reservation casino in Lansing, Michigan.
Ballots are being mailed today and are due May 3, according to news reports. The referendum will determine whether the tribe moves forward with the $245 million Lansing Kewadin Casino. The tribe has said it will submit a land-into-trust application for the casino later this summer. The tribe is citing a land claim exception in Section 20 of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.
