Editorial: Avoid name-calling in off-reservation gaming fight

"Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero has a well earned reputation for being quick on his feet and conveying his passion for an issue. Who doesn’t recall his stint as America’s “angry mayor,” appearing on countless national news shows to represent America’s manufacturing cities during the recession?

But Bernero’s quick tongue has a downside and his brash remarks can draw fire. Thus, his recent back-and-forth with Native Americans opposing Lansing’s proposed casino deal with the Sault Ste. Marie Chippewa Tribe is not surprising, although it is disappointing. Bernero apologized to anyone who was offended."
