Sault Ste. Marie Tribe announces off-reservation casino plans

The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians plans to open a $245 million off-reservation casino in Lansing, Michigan.

The tribe and the city are holding a press conference today to discuss the development. News reports said the 125,000- square-foot facility would feature as many as 3,000 slot machines and 48 table games next to the Lansing Center.

The project is already facing opposition. The Saginaw Chippewa Tribe has hired Phil Hogen, the former leader of the National Indian Gaming Commission, to fight the casino.
