Santee Sioux Tribe holds groundbreaking for new $20M casino

The Santee Sioux Tribe of Nebraska broke ground on a new $20 million casino on Thursday.

The 25,000-square-foot facility will replace the existing Ohiya Casino. It will feature a 47-room lodge with two luxury suites, a banquet facility and conference center; a convenience store and gas station and an 18-hole golf course and club house, The Yankton Press & Dakotan reported.

"Today is a beautiful day," said Chairman Roger Trudell, the paper reported. "The benefits Knox County will get from this will be like none that they’ve had for a very long time."

The tribe expects the casino to open in June 2012. It will create between 40 to 50 new jobs.

The project was made possible thanks to a loan from the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community of Minnesota, whose chairman, Stan Crooks, attended the groundbreaking.
