Fond du Lac Band back in court for disputed casino agreement

Monday, August 29, 2011

The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians is due in court on Wednesday over a gaming dispute with the city of Duluth, Minnesota.

In 1994, the tribe agreed to share 19 percent of gross revenues from the Fond-du-Luth Casino with the city. The tribe has shared over $80 million but stopped payments in 2009, saying the deal was illegal.

The National Indian Gaming Commission agreed and issued a notice of violation to the tribe in July. The tribe is seeking to avoid back payments and to invalidate future payments.
