The Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeno Indians has been meeting with staff for California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) in hopes of gaining support for an off-reservation casino.
The tribe plans to build the casino in Barstow. That's more than 100 miles from the reservation. The tribe needs to negotiate a Class III gaming compact with Brown. Under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, Brown also needs to approve the casino itself. The Bureau of Indian Affairs will hold a public hearing next Wednesday, July 27, to discuss the environmental impact statement for the casino. Get the Story:
