New York governor lobbied on Catskills off-reservation casino
Thursday, July 14, 2011
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) is being urged to back an off-reservation casino for the Stockbridge-Munsee Community of Wisconsin.
The tribe wants to build a casino in the Catskills, an area about 90 minutes north of New York City.
Supports want Cuomo to send a letter to the Bureau of Indian Affairs to support the plan.
The Bush administration rejected the casino but the Obama administration has rescinded a "guidance memo" that made it nearly impossible for tribes to acquire land away from existing reservations.
