Bartenders, drink servers, and bar porters at the casino owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut will vote in a union election on Monday.
The employees voted to organize with the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 371 last year. But this election will occur under tribal law. “The tribe has pledged to and has stated that they will continue to challenge the jurisdiction of the NLRB,” the union said in a press release, The Norwich Bulletin reported. “A court battle over this issue would continue for several years.” The tribe says the National Labor Relations Board can't enforce federal labor law on its reservation.
