City to consider resolution to work with Cowlitz Tribe on casino

The city of La Center, Washington, is considering a resolution to change its stance on the Cowlitz Tribe casino project.

The city passed a resolution in May 2007 that objected to the Cowlitz Casino Resort. The new resolution calls on the city to engage in "government-to-government relations" with the tribe.

“The current city council understands that, while the tribal development’s impacts could be negative, they could also be beneficial if effectively integrated into La Center’s plan for economic diversity, including the city’s sanitary sewer and transportation systems,” the resolution states, The Columbian reported.

The city is also staying out of litigation that other local communities filed after the Bureau of Indian Affairs approved the tribe's land-into-trust application.
