Stockbridge Munsee Band talks off-reservation casino with DOI
Monday, December 13, 2010
The Stockbridge Munsee Band of
Mohican Indians of Wisconsin has discussed its off-reservation casino with Interior Department officials, Chief Kimberly Vele said.
The meeting took place in Washington, D.C. Vele said she hopes to hear back from the department soon about plans for the casino in the Catskills.
“We were advised that they were taking that under advisement and that they would be working on it immediately and would be getting back in touch with us and we are attempting to schedule that meeting now,” Vele told Mid-Hudson News Network.
The tribe has signed a Class III gaming compact with the state of New York and has settled a land claim with the state. Tribal and state say the land claim does not need Congressional approval.
