The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians is trying to pick up the pieces after losing the Greektown Casino in Detroit, Michigan, through bankruptcy proceedings.
The tribe poured more money than expected into the commercial facility. So cuts were made to programs and some people lost their jobs on the reservation."There is a lot of bitterness," Chairman Joe McCoy told The Detroit News. "The casino was our main focus for the last two years."
The casino never generated as much revenues as the other two commercial casinos in Detroit. When the recession hit, it took an even bigger toll on Greektown. The tribe finally declared bankruptcy in May 2008. Get the Story:
