The Poarch Band of Creek Indians contributed $2.8 million to politicians in Alabama in the last year, The Birmingham News reports.
About half the money was spent in just the past few months. The tribe donated $1.4 million between June 29 and October 26, the paper said. "They have a near-monopoly now," University of Alabama professor William Stewart told the paper. "They like things the way they are. They don't want efforts made to interfere with their operations."
