The development authority in Fall River, Massachusetts, approved a contract to sell land to the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe for a casino.
The contract calls for the tribe to pay a total of $21 million for 300 acres in the city. The tribe also agreed to pay $35,000 for a referendum on the casino. One part of the contract apparently requires the tribe to comply with state environmental laws at the site. The tribe also apparently agreed to waive its sovereign immunity for purposes of enforcing the contract. The tribe plans to build a casino on the land. The site is reportedly being added to a pending land-into-trust application at the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Get the Story:
