Mashantucket Tribe backs protections for gay casino workers

Thursday, June 24, 2010

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut is ensuring gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered employees at its two casinos enjoy the same rights and protections as other workers.

The tribe recently passed a law to extend the employment policy at Foxwoods Resort Casino and MGM Grand at Foxwoods to include "sexual orientation, gender identity and expression." The tribe also expanded its minority vendor program to include businesses owned by gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered entrepreneurs.

“The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation is no stranger to discrimination and the struggle for dignity and equality, dating as far back as the early 17th century,” Mashantucket Pequot Gaming Enterprises Chief Marketing Officer Robert Victoria said in a press release. “At Foxwoods Resort Casino, we sympathize with the plight of any people striving to receive the dignity, acknowledgement and respect pursued by humankind as a whole, and we are proud to enact this initiative on behalf of our employees, as well as the LGBT community at large.”
