Column: Gun Lake Tribe opposes more Michigan gaming

Monday, April 26, 2010

"For 10 years, the Gun Lake tribe fought to build a casino with a straightforward message: It would bring much-needed jobs and money not only to the tribe but to the rest of the Wayland area.

So when the tribe joined a new group dedicated to blocking new casinos, you had to ask: When did this tribe become anti-casino?

If a gambling hall is such a good idea for Wayland Township, why isn’t it an economic boon for such depressed cities as Muskegon, Benton Harbor, Lansing and Flint?

But, yes, while the tribe is building a casino at the Bradley exit off U.S. 131, it is active in the group that calls itself “Protect MI Vote.”

That group is urging voters not to support two proposals to amend the state constitution and authorize 15 more casinos."
