Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe looks at new casino host

Friday, January 29, 2010

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts is considering another location for its casino, The Cape Cod Times reports.

The tribe has been looking at sites in Fall River, according to the paper. The mayor welcomed the idea of hosting a casino.

"Right now, the city of Fall River has the second highest unemployment rate in the commonwealth of Massachusetts,"Mayor William Flanagan told the paper. "So a gaming facility would put people to work of all skills levels and all education levels."

Chairman Cedric Cromwell confirmed the tribe met with officials in Fall River but said they discussed non-gaming issues. The tribe entered into an agreement with the town of Mashpee for a casino and has already spent money there.

"Our focus is Middleboro," Cromwell told the paper. "That's where we have an agreement."
