Kevin Abourezk: Omaha Tribe sued by contractor

Thursday, October 22, 2009

"An Omaha contractor is suing the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska for failing to pay for work the contractor did on the tribe's Iowa casino and other facilities.

StoreVisions, a partner of Vision Church Builders of Omaha, filed a civil complaint against the tribe in Thurston County District Court on Oct. 9.

The complaint seeks unspecified damages against the tribe for violating the terms of 11 contracts with the company. Those contracts were for work estimated by StoreVisions to cost $690,000.

The company argues in the lawsuit the tribe signed a waiver of its sovereign immunity, thereby allowing StoreVisions to sue the tribe in district court.

Neither StoreVisions' attorney nor the tribe's attorney could be reached for comment Wednesday.

Most of the contracts referenced in the lawsuit deal with work the company said it did on the tribe's CasinOmaha, which the tribe closed June 30. The tribe operated the casino on tribal land on the Iowa side of the Missouri River near Onawa."
