New Mexico tribe eyes off-reservation change

Monday, October 5, 2009

Jemez Pueblo of New Mexico might revive a proposed off-reservation casino if the Obama administration changes policy on the controversial issue.

The tribe sought to have 79 acres in southern New Mexico placed in trust. The site is about 300 miles from the reservation, a factor the Bush administration cited in rejecting the project.

At issue is whether gaming sites are within a "commutable distance" from existing reservations. The Bush administration adopted the criteria without consulting tribes or seeking public comment.
