North Dakota tribe pays $6.1M in casino case

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

The Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation of North Dakota was ordered to pay $6.1 million, plus interest, attorney fees and other costs, for breaking a contract with a casino developer.

The tribe entered into an agreement with Dale Little Soldier to develop a casino on the south shore of Lake Sakakawea. But the tribe withdrew after questioning some of the terms, Chairman Marcus Levings said.

"There were some issues that we couldn't agree to," Levings told The Bismarck Tribune.

The dispute went into arbitration, with a panel finding that the tribe breached the contract. The tribe will not appeal, an attorney said.
