The Shinnecock Nation of New York is moving closer to federal recognition but observers say it could be years before the tribe opens a casino.
If the tribe gains recognition, it will need to have land placed in trust before pursuing gaming. The process could take several years to complete. Even with trust land, the tribe would have to negotiate a compact with the state to operate Class III games such as slot machines and card games. "Things take a long time to happen," tribal trustee Fred Bass told The East Hampton Press. The Bureau of Indian Affairs agreed to issue a preliminary decision on the tribe in December.
