City officials mum on Tohono O'odham casino bid

Wednesday, February 4, 2009

Officials in Glendale, Arizona, are staying quiet for now on the off-reservation casino sought by the Tohono O'odham Nation..

The tribe is promising 6,000 construction jobs, 3,000 permanent jobs and $300 million for the state. City officials say they are reviewing the proposal.

"It is currently under staff review. We will know more after staff has had an opportunity to review it along with outside experts and consultants," deputy city manager Julie Frisoni told The Daily News-Sun.

The tribe purchased the 134-acre site with funds authorized by an act of Congress. The tribe says it qualifies for a land claim exception in the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.
