The Western Mohegan Indian Tribe and Nation says it doesn't need federal recognition to open a casino in New York.
The group, whose leader was convicted of submitting false documents to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, wants to build a casino in the Catskills, about 90 minutes north of New York City. Other federally recognized tribes have sought casinos there. Two villages are backing the proposal for a resort with a large hotel, multiple restaurants, retail space and a theater.
