The Cowlitz Tribe is offering to renew a casino agreement with the city of La Center, Washington.
The tribe and the city entered in an agreement to address the offsets of the proposed Cowlitz Casino Resort. Among other provisions, the deal provided the city with at least $3 million a year, an amount equivalent to the tax on local non-Indian card rooms. The state courts struck down the agreement due to lack of public input. Some city leaders have since said they oppose the casino. The Bureau of Indian Affairs published a final environmental impact statement for the casino in May, recommending approval of the tribe's land-into-trust application and gaming management contract.
