The House will vote next week on two controversial off-reservation casino bills.
H.R. 2176 and H.R. 4115 settle land claims for the Bay Mills Indian Community and the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, respectively. The bills allow the tribe to acquire new properties, away from their existing reservations, and open casinos. According to The Hill, Rep. John Conyers Jr., the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, will try to amend the legislation by requiring the Department of Justice or the Department of the Interior to review the tribes' land claims.
