California voters to decide on four compacts

Voters in California are going to the polls today to decide on four controversial gaming compacts

Propositions 94-97 ask voters to approve or reject compacts for the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, the Morongo Band of Mission Indians, the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians and the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation. The deals allow the tribes to operate more slot machines in exchange for a share of the revenues.

The pro-compact side has spent nearly $110 million on the campaign. Opponents, including race tracks, labor unions and two tribes who signed compacts in 2004, have spent more than $26 million.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) has been campaigning for the compacts. He says they will patch up holes in the state budget -- up to $9 billion over 20 years.

The latest Field Poll shows 47 percent of likely voters support the compacts while 34 percent are opposed. Another 19 percent are undecided.

Election results will be posted on http://vote.ss.ca.gov.
