County weighs challenge to Mechoopda casino
Thursday, January 24, 2008
Officials in Butte County, California, are weighing a challenge to the Mechoopda Tribe's proposed casino.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs has issued a finding of no significant impact for the project. The next step is for the 631-acre site to be taken into trust.
The county says the casino will harm the environment and increase traffic. The county lawyer says the BIA shouldn't have issued a FONSI.
The tribe was restored to recognition in 1992 after a lawsuit.
