The St. Croix Band of Lake Superior Chippewa was back in court this week over its off-reservation casino in Wisconsin.
The tribe sued the Bush administration last month, saying the Interior Department was making unlawful changes to its land-into-trust policy. In response, the government agreed not to make a decision on the St. Croix casino until January 31 at the earliest. But then the Bureau of Indian Affairs earlier this month issued new guidance for off-reservation casinos. The tribe amended its lawsuit to challenge the policy, which makes it harder for tribes to win approval for off-reservation casinos.
