BIA releases Mashpee casino land agreement

Tuesday, December 18, 2007

The Bureau of Indian Affairs released documents related to the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe's proposed casino in Middleboro, Massachusetts.

The documents included a 24-page option agreement for 200 acres. The $1.765 million purchase was not previously made public, according to The Cape Cod Times, which filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the BIA.

The 200 acres was purchased by an attorney for the tribe's investor, Herb Strather. The tribe's $8 million federal recognition bid was bankrolled by Strather.

The tribe has filed a land-into-trust application to use the properties in Middleboro for a casino.
