The Teamsters union is moving forward with efforts to organize workers at the casino owned by the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe of Michigan.
The union filed a formal request with the National Labor Relations Board to conduct an election at the Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort. Organizers want better wages and working conditions. Tribes aren't mentioned in federal labor law. But the NLRB has said it will assert jurisdiction on reservations in a case-by-case basis. Factors included whether a tribal enterprise, such as a casino, employs a large number of non-Indians or impacts non-Indians. The Saginaw Chippewa casino is mid-Michigan’s largest employer, The Mt.
