Passamaquoddy Tribe kicks off racino campaign

Thursday, September 27, 2007

The Passamaquoddy Tribe of Maine kicked off its "Yes on Question 1" campaign on Wednesday to gain voter support for a racino.

The tribe wants to build a racetrack with slot machines in Washington County. Passamaquoddy leaders said revenues will fund tribal government programs and services.

"Profits from Indian gaming can make a profound difference in the tribe’s ability to care for itself and its future," Pleasant Point Tribal Chief Richard Phillips-Doyle, the Associated Press reported.

Voters previously approved non-Indian racinos in 2004. But they rejected a full-fledged tribal casino.
