Massachusetts governor delays gaming decision

Wednesday, September 5, 2007

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick (D) said he needs a couple more weeks to decide whether to support Class III gaming.

Patrick had planned to announce a decision after Labor Day. He has received a confidential report from a task force he put together to examine the pros and cons of gaming.

Patrick said he was "very close" to a decision. He said his delay was not affected by the resignation of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe's chairman.

The tribe has filed land-into-trust applications to create an initial reservation and open a casino.
