Casino foes ramp up efforts in Massachusetts

Friday, August 24, 2007

Casino foes are making their views heard as Massachusetts awaits a decision on gaming from Gov. Deval Patrick (D).

Religious groups, former state officials and business leaders say a casino would be bad for the state. They say the negatives like addiction outweigh the benefits of jobs and revenue.

The Mashpee Wampnaoag Tribe wants to build a $1 billion resort. The tribe needs to negotiate a Class III compact and have its land placed in trust.

Patrick is set to make a decision on whether he supports gaming after Labor Day.
