Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe rejects counteroffer

Thursday, July 12, 2007

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe has rejected a "hostile" counteroffer to host a casino in the town of Middleboro, Massachusetts.

Chairman Glenn Marshall said he hopes the tribe and the town can reach an agreement. But a proposal that called for the tribe to pay property taxes in perpetuity and give up its civil jurisdiction over non-Indians was "unprecedented," he wrote in a letter to town leaders.

The rejection comes just two weeks before town voters are to consider whether to accept a casino deal with the tribe.
