Labor unions rally against California compacts

Wednesday, June 20, 2007

Hundreds of labor union supporters rallied at the state Capitol on Tuesday to protest gaming compacts with five California tribes.

UNITE-HERE, the union responsible for the anti-sovereignty ruling from the National Labor Relations Board, organized the rally. The group and its members say the compacts don't include provisions that will protect workers.

As demonstrators waved a banner that said "Billions for tribes. Nothing for workers," UNITE-HERE political director Jack Gribbon referred to the tribes as "a gambling cartel in Southern California," The Sacramento Bee reported.

At issue is "card-check neutrality," a process that makes it easier for unions to organize. The new compacts do not include language that was included in deals that some tribes signed in 2004.
