Oneida Nation faces DOI action on old compact

Tuesday, June 12, 2007

The Oneida Nation of New York faces an Interior Department decision this week on the status of an old gaming compact.

The tribe signed the compact in 1994. It was approved by the Bureau of Indian Affairs under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.

The compact was subsequently invalidated by the state courts. Now the BIA is trying to determine whether to revoke its approval of the agreement, a move that could lead to the closure of the Turning Stone Resort and Casino.

If that happens, the tribe will sue to keep the facility open, a lawyer said. The casino employs nearly 4,000 people.
