As promised, Maine Gov. John Baldacci (D) vetoed a bill to allow the Passamaquoddy Tribe to operate a racetrack with slot machines.
The House was unable to override the veto. That means the issue will end up on the November ballot. In 2000, state voters approved slot machines for two non-Indian racetracks. At the same time, they voted against a tribal-operated casino. The tribe says it should be able to operate a casino out of fairness. Get the Story:
